Kolkata residents protest power failure by CESC

Residents of Haridevpur, Kolkata, took to the streets on Tuesday to protest against the Kolkata Electric Supply Corporation (CESC) due to a power failure that began on Monday night. The protest occurred near the Haridevpur post office, with locals raising slogans against the electricity supplier.

According to Tinku Mandal, a local resident, the electricity went off around 11:30 pm on Monday, and despite numerous calls to CESC, no help arrived. The situation was miserable throughout the night due to the scorching heat. One woman reported that she was forced to sleep in a temple near her house because of the heat.

Upon receiving news of the protest, police arrived on the scene and persuaded the demonstrators to clear the road. Following pressure from the police, CESC sent two generators to the area. However, they were unable to provide sufficient electricity to the neighborhood.

Although the company has not made an official statement, sources have indicated that a transformer in the area suffered a short circuit, leading to the power disruption. CESC is reportedly working to fix the issue.
